I attended a show the past weekend in search of Garand parts, and picked up what I thought was a NOS butt plate. When I tried to install on a rifle, was way to tight, and took a longer look and seen that below the lower screw hole, it appeared to have a bend across it that was done during manufacturing. I did research on this sight and found an old thread explaining that early m14 butt plates were similar in design to Garand butt plates (no shoulder flapper). It also said that for a period they were made from aluminum, so I checked this one, and it is steel (magnetic).
Question is, during the early period of the m14, when SA was having difficulties with use of existing stock of M1 plates, were the sub-contracted ones made of steel? The one I picked up is a spitting image of the pictured ones, but only steel.
