I really did not know where to post this. I am considering the purchase of a Drag Bag for my M1A Scoped or Ruger Precision Rifle. But, I would like to know what other people are using? I am leaning towards a hard case especially for the RPR, but the idea of a drag bag is kind of on the plate as well. Please let me know what you guys are using and some good brands to look at. Thank you for your consideration in advance.

I've been considering a Pelican 1750 (hardcase) and the Voodoo Tactical 'Ultimate Drag Bag' (softcase), @ about $210 and $130 respectively.

I have a Pelican 1700 (too short for full-sized M14) and like the build quality and features. I saw the Voodoo recommended by TiborasaurusRex on the YouTubes.

I own both a Voodoo Tactical "drag bag" type case that's good for two rifles and I also own a wheeled Plano hard case that is advertised as a two scoped rifle case. I personally like the drag bag for trips to the range because it holds a lot more than just my rifles (mags, cleaning kit, targets, etc) but I like the hard case for long distance trips where I don't want to have to worry about where it'll be thrown in the car. In the end they both cost me around the same amount (100'ish), look for sales and get both! If I had to choose only one it would probably be the drag bag type since it's more versatile. That being said if yiu are thinking you might ever fly with your rifle or even if you just see yourself traveling with your rifle then the hard case is way better.

This awesome Plano got down to $89 when I picked mine up:

If you are not already following "MrGunsNGear" on Facebook then do it. 99 percent of his posts are gun related deals including awesome deals on rifles, ammo, and of course gun cases. He didn't sell anything he just posts it up there for his followers, he also has a YouTube channel with some decent videos.

Edit: sorry Pennamite but when j first quoted you and wrote my message below I had thought you were the OP posting what you were thinking of getting.... Pelicans are awesome if you have the dough, I just can't justify that price tag.

Not knocking Pelican, they make a hell of a case, but the Plano I listed above is 99 percent of the case for less than half the money. Unless you think you will fly a lot I don't see any way of justifying the extra cost in my head. My buddy has a Pelican and my Planos build quality and durability is very close. There is no way in heck my rifle would ever be damaged in my Plano. I would throw my Plano with my rifle in it out my second story window of my home with no second thoughts... Although I would make sure I had taken my optics out first! :)

Forgot to add... I liked my Plano so much I bought two of their 42" "Tactical" cases as well. Again on sale per MrGunsNGear deals he listed and I paid $50 for each of those.

I thought about a drag bag, but ended up using a Cabelas premium soft case that I already picked up on sale. I'll never need to drag my rifle. I use the CMP hard case for my M1's.

Plano is another that I've been considering, but I've got no experience with them. I'm just on more solid ground recommending the Pelican. As for the Voodoo, I've got no direct experience with that but I did cite my source for why I'm considering it.

Plano does look good and seems to receive good reviews on Amazon, which is my very thin rationale for considering it. Sometimes I buy, evaluate, then return if it doesn't pass muster.

JustinB60, thanks for the heads up on the Plano. I just ordered one on Amazon for $93.00 plus tax Prime. The box it comes in was damaged. I ordered another one from Walmart of all places for $102.00 with free shipping. They look like pretty tough cases, and I am more concerned about protecting the optics on each gun. Why pay 3-400 dollars for a hard case when these are available? Who knows I might get hooked on these for another rifle or two that I have in mind???? Fish

I might also still buy a Drag Bag for my other gun (s) since I always go the range with more than two guns.

Don't forget you can buy replacement "pick and pluck" foam for like $8 (so I've heard) so instead of buying 4 cases you can buy one or two and then buy a couple extra foam inserts and use the case for as many rifles as you want on the cheap!

I'd have to do some digging to remember who sells replacement foam but if you are interested let me know and I'll do some searching on my favorites tab of my computer... I'm sure I saved it up there somewhere.

Polack, funny you said that when I bought my m1a it came in a hard case. After fondling the rifle I pulled the egg trade foam up to look for the key. I found it along with 3 dirty magazines, like porn not like 20 rounders... I guess the old fellow forgot he put them there.

I have 3 soft cases I typically use.
Cabelas tactical-$70
Vodoo tactical double case-$100
Eberlestock sniper- $350

They all work fine and have held up without issues. The difference in quality and strength is obvious when you look at all 3 but if it's for the range does that difference matter to you?
It's all what you need it for, and how much you want to spend.

If you are going to carry 2 rifles, or be out in the field hiking on a hunt or a shoot , then only a soft drag bag with shoulder straps make sense as an example of what you want to use it for. If you travel by air, then hardcase with lock.

One thing I've heard about that I'm thinking of trying, is get both. The drag bag is for camping, and when you need a hard case you pull the foam out and stuff the drag bag in the hard case. Best of both worlds...

I use a drag bag, it has worked great for years, I am fairly gentle on handling of the weapon though in transit and at the range. If I ever were to travel on a plane, I would need to get a Pelican case to protect the optics for sure. I have been thinking about attending a shooting school out of state, I will have to get one.
