I finally bought an M1A Standard about a month ago, I’ve put about 100 rounds through it so far.

I’m having a problem with the trigger group. When I was taking it apart for cleaning, I had difficulty rotating the trigger guard to the unlatched position. It seems there’s a roll pin that acts as a stop that prevents my trigger guard pass the full open position. Should I simply just push the roll pin in with a screwdriver/punch?

Thanks.

The only roll pin that could block the trigger guard is the magazine latch roll pin, is that what's in the way?

Lower right pin in the picture.

Probably not the issue if you've confirmed it's the mag latch roll-pin, but if you have the hammer in the uncocked position (as shown in photo above) it will interfere with the trigger guard opening.

If it's not the roll-pin, pull the hammer back manually until it's cocked, put the safety on, and the trigger guard should rotate unencumbered.

You can open the trigger guard with the hammer uncocked, you just have to overcome the resistance of the hammer spring.

First post, eh? Boy, did you come to the right place.

Welcome from Illinois.
If it's the magazine roll pin that worked out a bit, pop it back in flush.
If it's something else, the above guys got it covered.

Also, watch Tony Bens videos in general, and he has a good one on taking apart the trigger group. Very easy to do.

Thanks everyone.

Yes, it was the magazine roll pin (indicated on that picture, lower right). The hammer was already in the cocked position.

Does that pin usually come out often after shooting?

Oh and yes, I'm new to M1As and my M1A is brand new.

A solution. You may need to flare one end of the roll pin, expanding its diameter just enough to give it a frictional interference fit so that it will stay where it belongs. It doesn't need to be removed completely to accomplish that.

My M1A has been with me since 1978. That roll pin has never worked loose.

For what it's worth, when I lube my rifles up (M1A or M1 Garands) I put a dab of grease on the surface of the trigger guard where it rotates into the receiver legs and locks the trigger housing in place. Those pins will wear over time and I just feel better if there's some lube there to reduce the wear. That's the only thing on that trigger guard that will wear out and I don't want to have to replace them if I can help it.
