Converting to Bush Rifle?

1630 Views 13 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  MsgtMaze
I'm mulling over turning my standard length M14NM into a Bush Rifle - for handiness above all else.

I've been told that there's no other way to do so other than to have a Bush bbl installed. At the cost of $300 plus "several months" wait, I became curious.

Is there anything preventing me from just simply having the bbl cut down to 18.5"? Does the gas system need any modification?

Or, alternately, am I better off just buying a Bush/Scout Rifle and calling it a day?

Converting to a bush is very easy. The easy tools are available from Brownell's. You will need an 11 degree crown cutter, barrel pilot, and cutter handle. The cost is about $120 or so. I bought all of mine a few years back and the cost was about $75. One hacksaw with a new blade is also required.

After you cut it you can take the barreled action to a local machine shop and have it threaded to what ever size and pitch you want. This will be about $40 - $60. I did mine to 1/2-28 which are AR-15 threads. The muzzle device options weremore plentiful.

I did not have to work on the gas system at all and have put close to 350 rds with no problems.

You could get a gunsmith to do all of this for about the same price but most don't have a clue about this type of work and you do not get to keep the tools for your next project. It will also take about 4-5 times longer because most gunsmiths had rather visit than do gun work, board company exceped.

Good luck.
I'd just buy a Bush rifle and avoid the problems cobbling one together. You can probably just trade your current rifle for one and that's a lot cheaper than converting it. Your current rifle + $300 is going to be worth what it started out being worth at best.

Zed and Chuck,

Thanks for the input! I'm waiting for my machinist buddy to get back from overseas within the next two weeks. At that point, I'll see wether he's got the gear to do the job.

If not, I'm thinking of picking up a Poly to send out to Smith for the Bush Rifle treatment. I'd rather not spend the Ducats for an SA if I can help it.

Call Ron Smith at Smith Enterprise and got onboard with his M-14 “Bush” Barrel Conversion, $285… money well spent.

Something I really like and would like to do when I get around to it is to have a Bush type rifle converted/built with the EBR front end parts, I just think that the EBR looks soooo cool.

What does EBR stand for?
TB,

Thanks for the link - I'll be ringing Smith up tomorrow to get the details and turnaround time. Should have gone there first.

Zed,

EBR means "Enhanced Battle Rifle" - in use now by SOCOM. Nice sticks - shoot as well as full sized M14s.

Smith did mine in under 3 weeks and its great. If you're going to convert it have them do it
You won't regret it

Does your rifle have the match grade barrel?

I don’t know if that is something I really want, I was thinking more along the lines of a bush rifle (18-inch GI chrome lined barrel) with the gas lock sight and the EBR vortex flash hider.

I’m real curious to hear how the “real” EBR shoots.
Standard barrel is 1:12 twist while a quality bush/scout barrel is 1:11. Something to keep in mind when making your decision.

Ron built my LRB EBR shortly after the first Navy EBR's were shipped. Shooting Port surplus ammo I get groups from under 1" to 1 1/2" if I do my part using the Ghost ring sights. I haven't tried shooting Match Ammo in her yet but may try some Fed Match next outting.

I went with the 17 5/8" Med Hvy Match barrel the Navy had requested from Ron. It received the first USN Gas Lock Front Sight sold outside of the military.

If I didn't live in the state of Confusion, I'd like to install it in a Sage stock..... maybe someday?

Msgt, what length is the barrel that the Vortex fits flush against the gas block?

I believe Fulton Armory's Bush Barrel is 18.5 inches.

It's Smith's 17 5/8" Med Hvy Douglas Match..........

I think that's why Ron had them made 17 5/8" instead of 18"
