I was just curious, back in the day when I was a patrolman we didn't have computers in our cruisers and concealed carry was not on the books here in Ohio.
My question is for those current in law enforcement, if when you pull a vehicle over and you run the plates on your console does it come back with information if the owner is licensed with a concealed carry permit?
Here in Ohio if you are detained by an officer and you are carrying your weapon you must immediately declare to him or her that you are a licensed CCW holder and that you are armed.
I was thinking if running one's plates came back with that info then the declaration part of our statute is rather redundant.

Here in Florida CCW is administered by the State Department of Agriculture and their records are not automatically available thru DMV. That is according to discussions I have had with LEO's.
Then I would wonder if the databases are varied from state to state?

You don't need a CCW to carry a loaded gun in your car in Georgia.
Some states don't understand a Constitutional right as well as others.

It surprises even people in Georgia when I tell them this. A lot of people here, especially young people, have no idea what their 2nd Amendment rights are.

If you don't have a clue what your rights are, you won't complain when they're taken away. It's amazing to me how many people are totally in the dark about gun laws in Georgia, even the ones who legally own guns.

When I got my FL. CCL, it was made clear to me that you don't need a carry license to own and possess a loaded handgun, in your home or car, in FL, but to have the weapon concealed on your body, you have to take the course and get the license, which allows you to carry concealed in your car and in public. I thought that the only requirement to possess a handgun (not concealed) In most free states, is that you are not a convicted felon, or have an order of protection against you. Am I mistaken?

Here in Texas my chl came with the same picture that they used on my dl, so I have no doubt there are is some overlap.
While the above statement is true that your DL (driver's license) and your LTC (license to carry) are linked, your vehicle registration is not linked.

There was some discussion when the permit to carry first came up about linking the vehicle registration to the LTC but it was determined that the registered owner of the vehicle was not always the one driving and the vehicle tags often move with the vehicle if it is sold. (Which is why if I sell a vehicle I remove the plates so the new owner has to get it registered.)

Your vehicle registration is linked to a vehicle issuance database that will let the LEO know if the vehicle is insured just by running the plates.

You are required by law to let the LEO know immediately if you have a firearm in your car, whether or not you have a LTC.

In Texas it is legal (no felonies, ect) to have a loaded firearm in your vehicle without a LTC but it cannot be carried open or concealed except between your vehicle and your home or to the range.

I don't think that, that info is supposed too come up and that is why your required too make that declaration too the Deputy/Officer when you are carrying if your pulled over. If it did just "Pop Up" I would be real pissed off.... That is in effect would make your CCW/Drivers License and Vehicle Registration all a pseudo gun registration if it did.

Actually, . . . the fact that the owner's name of the license plate on the car does have a CCW is an elementary part of the information given to an LEO stopping an Ohio driver in Ohio.

I already knew this from years ago, . . . but just this year I got stopped for going too slow on a rural highway (go figure) and got a warning issued.

I also had forgotten to tell him I had a CCW, . . . and he pointedly asked me if I did, . . . his eyes brightened when I told him I sure did: a commander sized 1911, in condition 1, in the glove box.

We parted on friendly terms, . . . but the point I'm making, . . . he knew before he left his cruiser that old DEwite, . . . was very possibly armed.

May God bless,
Dwight

I can't speak for other states but when pulled over in WV and my WV plates are run, it does come back that I have a CCW WV license. I am not required to self declare I WV and we now have Constitution Carry.

Other thoughts: just because I have CCW license doesn't mean I even own a gun. I know a few that went through the class and filed the paperwork and never closed the loop and bought a gun. Go figure.

One last comment, I recently went on a 12 day, 12 state, 4000+ mile driving "vacation". Trying to keep up with which states I had to self declare, which states I could even have a loaded gun in the car and which states I had to keep it in a locked case was onerous. I'm sorry for those that live in Illinois, I stopped before entering the state filled my gas tank, emptied my blatter and proceeded to drive straight through the state without stopping.

I can't speak for all of them but here in CA the amount of info they keep is mind boggling but at the same time very disorganized. Ex a local sheriff might have my current address, CCW info as well as some 4473 info of long rifle purchases BUT a cop in another town didn't have my correct home address.

Hypothetical situation: Johnny Law runs the plates on a car he's pulling over and sees its registered to Innocent Bystander. Then he runs a license cross reference under IB's name and voila! he's got a chl. So while the databases may or may not be linked, it's really a moot point.
