Hello from a newbie. I saw on the interweb that CMP is now selling 308 ammo. Anyone else tried it yet? It is made by a company called Atomic. Their website says its made in America. 200 rounds of match grade 308 with Nosler Bullets. I cut and pasted this description from CMP.

.308 caliber ammunition manufactured by Atomic Ammunition sold in 200 round Plano manufactured, reuseable plastic ammo can. Featuring Nosler Custom Competition 168 grain hollow point boat tail, 2600 fps, over Varget powder loaded in once fired military brass. Loaded specifically for use in .308 Garand rifles and other semi auto service rifles.

I had a chance to shoot some. I knew that I would be happy with the Varget but I have always shot Sierras MKs. I was surprised that the Noslers are just as accurate. I liked it, my rifle liked it more. It costs way less than any other match ammo I have seen. The brass was mixed almost all Lake City. Primers looked like Winchesters. Looked clean enough to be new except for the small ejection marks. Nifty box. I'm done reloading for 308. I'm just gonna shoot this stuff. I like supporting CMP and buying it through them. It makes me like this company too.

After talking to some of CMP's people at the Oklahoma Games I bought a can of it.
I was told that this is the ammo the CMP uses to test fire the .308s. Very clean and
my can is all Winchester brass, I will buy more.

I reload most of my match ammo. Just thought I would give this a try. .93 per rnd is not bad if it shoots as good as some of the fellows say it does. I ordered 4 cans. Having lived throught the '50s the name alone is intreging. " Atomic Ammo".

Charles,

The Federal stuff is pretty good, but this is still about $10 less for 200 rounds and that ammo can is worth another $10 at the local sporting goods chain, plus I dont have to pop for 500 rounds worth of ammo at a time. I like it.

The bullet alone is about $0.70 a piece. Having lived thru times when reloading was the way to go and times when it made "cents" to buy loaded off the shelf. I can say that these are reloading times.

Not sure is this is "match" ammo. For one, Varget probably isn't the best choice of powders for this. IMR4064 or IMR4895 may be a better choice. Haven't had great results with Varget, and should have done more research before ordering this.
If you look closer, this thread is from 2012. The CMP Atomic brand .308 ammo is sold out, and has been for some time. There is currently no .308 ammo of any type available from the CMP.

besides not being able to buy it, there is this:

The M14 has issues with port pressure, and the only issue of influence is knowing the upper limit on burning
rate, which is a 4064. I think 4064 is borderline but don’t think it will ever harm a rifle. Others purport
to be right in the range but,
VARGET®, for instance, is
too slow despite what
Hodgdon® says. Shoot
some and it’s plain. It hurts
the rifle. IMR® 4895,
Hodgdon® 4895, Accurate
Arms® 2495 are, I think,

the very best choices.
