I was sighting in a new flash hider sight combo at the ole ranch range today and noticed a drifting to the left. Although I don't have years of m1a matches or anything behind me, I'm a pretty decent shot. I noticed how the sun setting on my right (target's to the south) that even with small click adjustments to the right, I always seemed to impact favoring to the left. I still got her done and verified at 300 but thought it was interesting none the less....

Jim Owens describes this effect in his book "Sight Picture, Trigger Control and the Big Lie". I've experienced it as well but didn't understand it until recently.

Did you have your front sight post blackened? Sun glint off the post can play hell with your vision.

Tim
Yes sir, I thought of that but all I had was a pencil. I was very aware of that glint possibility but it's kinda like a solar eclipse, hard to fully comprehend it until it's happened.

I love these little details of shooting!
