I recently bought a SA M1A. I've been researching ammo and notice surplus stuff referred to as "boxer" or "Berdan". What's the differance? Is it an issue if used in our rifles? Thanks
Those are the different types of primers that are used in the cases. The boxer are reloadable and the berdan are, for the most part non-reloadable. Both are fine in our rifles. To tell which you are using, after firing look inside the case, boxer will have one hole in the center of the case, berdan will have two smaller holes to the outer edge.
Boxer was a Brit officer, but the Brits (and most military forces other than USA) use Berdan primed cartridges. Berdan, of course, was a US officer.....
Unless you're reloading the primer type is immaterial.
I reload both, one shoots as well as the other. Snag, the Berdan primers cost more and are harder to find. The thing I'm really not to fond of is that a good part of the Berdan cases are steel. :x Just a little food for thought. The good news is that when you go somewhere where you can't recover your brass with the steel Berdan cases you haven't lost anything because they are only good for one or two reloads anyway.
Well, Si, it's this way. I've been doing so much reloading lately I haven't had time to shoot much. I guess that's why I'm so fond of the Fast Forward stuff, gets me back to the bench faster.
