Picked up a couple stocks a while back to refinish. The Birch is from Doug Carlton. Both are fantstic pieces of wood with very unique grain and figure. I decided that I would try a selective staining technique this time. I think it turned out well for both stocks.
After cleaning with soygel and steaming dents and bruises, I placed the darkest stain in the areas with dark striping and open grain with a Qtip. From this point I sanded up to 320 grit dry. I then stained again with color. At this point i went to wet sanding with 400grit and Teak oil. I let them stand a couple days then wiped clean and place several coats of wax. I think they turned out pretty well. The Planky walnut is killer. Anyway, enjoy
