Today, my Troy S.A.S.S. arrived. I'm pumped! But, I just realized that I need a bipod. I have very little experience with bipods. The rifle is an M1A NM. Any suggestions?

I'm a fan of the Harris bipods myself, I have four of their popular 6-9" swivel bipods with the nothched legs and have never had a bit of trouble with any of them ... very good product for the money.

Harris- a little bouncy but some guys like that bounce.
GG&G heavy duty or extreme duty. Solid no give.
Atlas- solid no give. Has a few more features QD and cant.

I have all 3, and you can't go wrong with any of them. I prefer the Atlas myself and keep that on my M25.

I get better accuracy from sandbags than bipod.

I see that various military units are using the Harris bi pod even though it is not as robust as others on the market, but must do the job OK or they would not be using them.

I use Harris bipods and have no complaints. Atlas is better but not worth it for me. I have two Harris bipods and will be getting a 3rd soon.

GG&G is number 1 on my list. Next would be Atlas.
I do have a bunch of Harris, but the other two are much better for my purposes.

I have an Atlas on my Ruger Precision Rifle and understand why they are used by police and snipers. It is rock solid, and expensive. You can also buy extensions to use with it if you buy the shorter series.

Most bipods are fine. Heck, even the milspec bipod is good if you know all the quirks. And they all have quirks.

But to be the contrarian here, my favorite bipod is no bipod at all.

A LOT of guys (not saying you nor anyone here) fall into "monkey-see, monkey-do" thinking when it comes to many accessories and probably bipods most of all. Everyone ELSE has one, so it must be great stuff, right? I usedta be that way, myself.

But what I've come to learn is that I shoot better *without* a bipod most of the time. So my AR-10 and NM M1A got stripped of theirs, though my heavy-stock, HB, NM M1A stubbornly refuses to let go of that one ;-)

If it solves a problem, then sure. I'd never tell a man what to decide. But don't feel obligated to have one, is all i'm saying.

I just got to use a atlas bipod for the first time this week and I will be adding one of those to the collection. I've also seen two Harris bipods catastrophically fail this week. If you preload your bipod I would not depend on the Harris, I've seen more than a few fail.

Nothing against Harris, I just don't think the belong on an M-14 type rifle.
