Thanks for responding & pointing me to DCMP. I went there first thinking they would carry USGI gages or an even better design, but no luck. They carry only a Badger-Ordnance M1 T/E gage and a universal .30 M/E gage. I didn't see what I need on Bill Ricca's website, but the guy who runs Stone Ax Engineering is a member of this board. Does anybody have experience with Scott Duff, Ara-Mor, or Stone Ax Engineering gages. I need to measure different types of USGI .30 cal/7.62mm NATO barrels: -03, BAR, M1, & M14. Some barrels will be threaded on the receiver and some barrels will be unmounted replacement parts.
Thanks
Carey

The problem you will run into is each throat erosion gage was originally designed based upon a specific firearm. The 03 will be different from the M1, which is different from the M14.

The GI gages disappeared into collections years ago. On my site all I have left is the GI Garand in .30 cal. I also have a GI 03 throat gage, but it is not listed yet.

There is a nice gage I use, it is a combination M1/M14 with inserts that screw into the body. It works and is accurate. I don't remember who made it, or even if it is still made.

More than anything, make sure you stay away from Aluminum gages.

Carey,
First off welcome to the finest M14 forum on the net. Now on to your question, I bought my M14 TE/ME gauges from Fulton Armory, don't know about the best but they had them in stock and they work fine. Fulton shipped them out fast and I had them in less than a week from when I ordered them. I have used them maybe 4 times and they are now sitting in my safe, ready for the next purchase.
Now pull up an ammo crate and sit a spell, we'll put on a fresh cup of joe for ya
Welcome

TE Gages

Brownell's sells a very good TE Guage that has interchangable .30-06 and .308 for the Garand/M14 and an addaptor for the 1903. It's works and it is excellent quality. I've seen the Badger guage for the Garand and it is basically identical to the military guage. I wouldn't balk at using any of them. Muzzle guages are almost un-needed for the m14. I've been working on M14's for over 25 years and I've seen some extremely worn throats, but never found an M14 with a worn out muzzle. Not the case with the M1.

Hi guys,
Thanks for all the help. I apologize for using the term "best". I should have used "most flexible". After researching this problem with your help, I don't think a gage is manufactured so as to check throat erosion in a dismounted spare barrel. As Bill Ricca stated, each T/E gage is firearm-specific. But with NOS/NIW replacement barrels becoming increasingly hard to find, I will have to be a little creative when gaging a dismounted used spare barrel or a BAR. As far as I can tell, no gage listed here is designed to check T/E in a BAR at all. All you can check on a BAR or BAR barrel is Muzzle Erosion (Muzzle Wear).
It looks like the T/E gage Brownell's sells, the gage from Scott Duff, and the T/E gage Bill Ricca referred to are all the same ARA-MOR gage.
Thanks again,
Carey

Any more input?

I'm resuscitating this thread to see if there is any more input. I need to buy TE/MW gauges and I'm looking at Fulton Armory while they are having their current sale. I would gladly take more suggestions before I make a decision. Thanks.

I've got the ARA-MOR gauges here. I need to get them listed again on my site. I had ran out of them and took them off for a long time but they are back in now. FWIW, they are the exact same gauges I used for the m14 while I was in the service. Same name and everything.

Lexington, I picked up a set from Fulton Armory. Their gauges seem to be well made. I think you won't go wrong with them. It will be interesting to see how the barrel wears over the years ahead. You will have to remove the flash hider to check the ME on your own shooter though-something I think few will do regulary. Of course they are very useful when shopping for other barrels.

I just ordered a set of Fulton gauges (can't beat the 20% off sale) and a ARA-MOR TE gauge from Brownell's. Will play with both and then probably sell one here on the forum.

Fulton vs. ARA-MOR

I bought both an ARA-MOR TE gauge and a Fulton TE gauge. Photos are shown of each gauge measuring the same barrel - a new General Dynamics NM medium contour barrel.

In absolute terms, the ARA-MOR gives the more "complimetary" reading @ 0, with the Fulton showing just over 0.

Of course, readings are relative, and if the Fulton or the ARA-MOR gauge were used exclusively on this barrel as it wore, then the rate of wear measured would be the same.

For inquiring minds, the ARA-MOR gauge comes in sections to create the right gauge for either M1/M14 in .308, or M1 in .30-06.

The Fulton gauge is a single piece of steel (except for the handle) that is designed to measure the M14.
