best accurizing for m1a novice

I have a Springfield M1a stainless/loaded with about ten rounds through it.
I have also purchased a Springfield M-21 walnut stock with adjustable cheek rest. I would like to have some degree of accurizing done in order to sqeeze the most accuracy out of this gun as is possible for about 350.00 to 400.00 dollars. I live in Dallas, Texas and would like to have it done as quick as possible. One of the questions that I have is weather pillar bedding is much better than standard glass/steel bedding? and does anybody have any suggestions as two what should/could be done and by whom. I have e-mailed Warbird and he seems to have the best deal going but I think he only does the standard bedding.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Aloha Bill:

Taking an SA Loaded M1A into account, a M21 stock will be really nice but will need to be bedded to that particular receiver.

I would also recommend, a NM style op rod spring guide, a NM unitized gas cylinder with the bedding to begin with. Your sights, trigger and FH should be quasi NM ready.

True Pillar Bedding cannot be performed on your stock because you do not have a lugged receiver. Pillar bedding would add pillars with screws to your rear and (optional) forward lug. Standard bedding should be quite adequate for most purposes. I would recommend "steel" bed or Devcon Steel bedding material for long life and service.

Solid bedded pillars can be built into the work to sustain compression of the receiver area but that is optional. The main purpose of bedding the receiver is to keep it solid in a bedded shell from side to side and forward to back movement. The trigger group will keep the downward pressure on the receiver from the bottom (which will also be bedded normally).

That will get you off and running. Warbird is more than capable and prepared to take of your general needs. Sending it to a "big name" might take a while... so if that is way you are going, then you need to make some calls right away to find out what the wait time is.

It might also make good sense to acquire the NM parts you want installed ahead of time, it will make he work progress faster.

These parts and mods should be within your budget. Beyond that, complete NM hooded sights, a super trigger job, etc. will add to the project.

I hope this helps some.

Aloha, Best Wishes and Good Luck!

tom hit the nail on the head. Just use steel bed and do a standard bedding job and make sure everything is tight and not wiggling around on the barrel. You are gonna learn some tricks to make it shoot over time. I would tell you but I would have to write a book. Get it bedded and a nm spring guide and sights to start then come on out here for a weekend and I'll take you out after some long range prairie dogs with it and then you will see how good a m-14 can truly shoot. It's a lot different than shooting paper. Some people get too hung up on group size even if the rifle can hit a prairie dog at 800 yards they can't understand why it won't group on paper. Shooting off a bench vs prone on a bipod has a lot to do with it for a service rifle.

Howdy again there Bill,

As you can see, I have some good references from very experienced folks here. I for one am gratefull for that for sure.

I have 4 M1, M1a rifles and 1 special project rifle that I'm building right now. If you still need or want work done, I'm currently running about 1-1/2 weeks turn around time. Per previous emails, I can do anything you need so feel free to let me know when you're ready.

Thanks guys I sure appreciate your help. m14Dan, you better watch out I am liable to take you up on that. I am orderind a nm spring guide from Rooster33 and will send the rifle to warbird next week. I dont think I
will modify the sight because my vision is not great and I do have Smith mounts and a Burris Black Diamond 3x12 scope on it now.
Thanks again,
Bill

Anytime you want. Just let me know in advance so I can load a weekends worth of ammo. We are fixing to go out hog hunting here in a couple hours. I like getting out there around 10-midnight and laying in an old hog waller about 100 yards from a feeder. It's cool on nights like this when the moon is out and you can see something.
billh,
you are on the right track, and ask m14dan if you can take a buddy for that prairie dog hunt. Oh, and can I be that buddy? PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE. :D
You can go too. Maybe we can try each others stock risers in a side by side test. I think I have made all the prairie dogs nervous out there for now. Yesterday after I fired the first two shots I had to wait an our till another one popped his head up. That was only one of the infested fields though. I got 5 of them anyway. I was trying out some bullets I never used in the m-14 before. The nosler 168. I like the price much better than barnes but I need to work on them for accuracy. I actualy missed a couple and they were only 450 yards and wind was 30 mph straight to me. They fly different than the barnes enough where I underguesstimated windage. I use kentucky windage and leave my scope alone.
