If you have a scope with side focus the standard mount will likely not work for you.

Also the ring spacing is fixed. If your scope has a longer adjustment box on the tube it might not fit. A lot of tactical type scopes are just long enough here to not fit.

With fixed ring spacing you don't have much if any adjustment for eye relief. There is only 1/4 of an inch extra space with many scopes to fit between the rings.

Having the rings at an angle means the ring height will make the center line of the scope be off center with the center line of the bore. Might be just a tiny bit but it can affect what is already a tenuous cheek weld.

Other than that the thing looks kind of silly with the rings canted at an angle but that really won't make a difference to function.

Besides the standard mount being unattractive (my opinion), the scope rings are hanging at a 45 degree angle and not supporting the scope from under it.

I got the Basset picatinny low mount because it allows, as others have said, for a wider selection of scope usage and allowed me to mount a 30MM Euro style scope with medium height rings with plenty of clearance. In my particular case, I will most likely not use a add on check rest to use the scope, it is mounted that low. YMMV.

And, IMHO, it really looks like it belongs on the rifle

Not quite following you here, Eagle...45 degrees? I have two Bassett standard mounds...both mount the rings and scope vertically with no offset.
Then you probably have low Picatinny mounts. The original mounts are canted at 45˚. The 45˚ mount is my least favorite.

Get the Picatinny high or low and a Bradley adjustable cheek rest.

Tony.

Get the picatinny. High or low is personal preference.
It gives you more flexibility in scope eye relief.
It just looks a whole lot better than the old school mount.
Even without the scope on it, I think it gives the rifle a nice scout type of look.
The last benefit I recently realized after 5 years of using it. I've never found any shell marks on my scopes although I do see brass marks on the bottom of the basset. I think it defects them away from hitting the scope. So I see that as a major plus for the pic mount.
I have 2 of the high pic mounts.

The high Picatinny mount came yesterday, which i pretty impressive since I ordered it Wednesday IIRC. Rings will be here tomorrow, I have either a Leupold Rifleman 4-12 x 40 or a VX-1 2-7 x 33 I could put on it handy. I figure I'll try that Rifleman first.

Uncle Alvah, I am considering the Basset mount for my Scout so I have been following your post.

I like to develop loads and I'm always experimenting and looking for a tighter shooting load or just "something different".

I too have a couple of scopes I can use and decided to put quick detachable rings on the scopes. I'll use the higher power scope for load development and the low power for plinking etc. With quick detachable rings I can trade off whenever I want and still only need one mount.

Thats a sensible approach. I considered the quick detach rings but whatever scope ends up on the M1A its likely to stay right there. The 4-12 is currently on a CZ 521, and its not ideal for that gun. The 2-7 arrives tomorrow and I'm thinking that will be a better match-up with the CZ, and the Rifleman can live on the M1A. Nothing is set in concrete though..

IMO , QD rings and a Bassett mount is kinda like a belt and suspenders.
Kind of redundant....

One of the chief selling points of the Bassett is easy on easy off with one single bolt and the ability of staying sighted in upon reattachment.

One of the major reasons why I just ordered the Bassett picatinny low mount for my M-14. If I want to shoot irons I just remove the Bassett mount and scope. Reverse it and I'm back shooting with glass with a few minor adjustments if needed.
