Whats the skinny on match barrels 4groove, 6groove, 5R, brand and materal is a non-issue, which gets cleanest fastest and which shoots best longest. I`m interested more into rifleing types and there effect on bullets.(friction/velosity/erosion/stabilty.) So don`t hold back I need a education on rifleing and what works. Why does the Marine Corps use the 5R in there DMR when a 4 or 6 groove may/maynot work? I know this quistion is a jumble but so is my brain on ths subject I know what 5R is but why does it work and is it any better??? :?:

What's a 5r? I probably should know tat but I don't. As far as the marines using it I have no idea why. The last one I carried in the field had a standard chrome bore and a scope fitted to it and I could give a marine and his m-14 a run for his money any day. I grew up a marine brat and ever since I was old enough to join the navy have gone out of my way to one up marines. If they got a better barrel than me I need to get one. I now got a douglas 6 groove 1 in 10 twist heavy barrel that can easily hang with the best sniper m-14 out there. I wish I could help you more but I can give a very good recommendation for my barrel if you are looking for something that can shoot a 165-175 grain bullet accurate enough to whack a prairie dog out to 700 yards or so.

5R IMHO stands for 5 lands and grooves. There polygonqal in shape(that means there rounded or there edges are rounded) I think that the Soivet SVT Dragonov has a barrel rifled in this manner but there workmanship is crappola, anyway this rounded shape is/should help keep down bullit friction/drag in the bore this keeps volisity higher at the same pressure/load level, barrel temps are reduced and helps minimize copper fouling I read this somewhere or was told but I don`t remember.
If anyone has a words on this subject please chime in this is what I don`t know?

for poop on the 5R go to snipercountry and do a search or look on their "hot tips and cold shots" section. Phil's more or less correct on the 5R but there are other differences that I can't recall. Point is that the 5R profile (in a good barrel like Obermyer and Rock) deforms the bullet less and has a better "seal". I have a Rock 5R on my GA Precision SCLE rifle and the damn thing is incredible! It also refuses to foul. I can shoot a 50 round "session" and be perfectly squeaky clean after three patches :D .

Hi Phil,

I just asked a similar question in the Precision Rifle section. Well, I mainly asked for more information on the 5R barrel... I had quite a bit of help there... maybe you might want to take a look and download the article Skullboy posted.

I am reading this thread with great interest. Sorry I can't contribute. But it will be a good read.

Thanks Tom and Trumpet, I read the article and it was very inforitive on that sniper system but it lacked info that I wanted. It did give a # that I can call and ask questions. Like what is the avg. velosity gained with 5R over a 4 or 6 groove tube, this is a good question we all want to know, how many round down range will the 5R go before accuracy degrades, yes shooting styles and disiplines very but even a NM tube will go a season or two(5000rds aprx) before they loosen up and there accuracy starts too fall off. Then there is the dredded cost factor while some have a I dont care toward cost I do(if this tube is $1000. I can buy 3 Dougless and get over 10years of use out of them and be time and money ahead)compared to Hart, Dougless, Barnet and others my cheap Springfield med wt. NM is on its 3rd season and is still hovering on a inch and a half thats over 8500rds maybe I got lucky? Will upgrading to a 5R give as good a service as I`ve gotten? I will make the calls and report back any info.

Phil,
A Mike Rock 5R, should only set you back about $250. They (and Obermyer) are the "best of the breed". There are reports from a SOTIC instructor of 5R's on their M24's still shooting with upwards of 25 THOUSAND rounds through them (just as an experiment, they usually rebarrel WAY before then, whether the rifle needs it or not).
