On this specific matter, write (no e-mail) a letter to each of your U. S. Senators and your Congressman. Let them know politely how you feel about any proposed gun legislation. This does have a positive effect.
I hope it does because my fingers hurt and I am out of ink as well as people to write to.GI9

What can we do?
I think it's important that this issue not be framed as a left-right conflict. Believe it or not, there are liberals who view the 2nd Amendment as a civil liberty. Not many, but they do exist. Right now we need their support.

One thing I found helpful, in discussing the issue with liberals:

"Living With Guns: A Liberal's Case for the Second Amendment, Craig Whitney explores areas where the two opposing sides might find common ground, and even compromise. Whitney, a former New York Times editor, joins NPR's Rachel Martin to discuss the complexities of the debate and possible solutions."
http://www.npr.org/2012/11/18/165296405/a-book-to-break-the-gun-control-stalemate

Whitney is not a 'hard core' gun guy, but he does understand the 2nd Amendment is not just about duck hunting. Quote: "You're never going to solve the gun violence problem with gun control alone."

Actually NPR -- despite it's left lean -- has been far more objective in covering gun issues than most of the mainstream media.

When I wrote an email to my congressman about my feelings on High Speed R(F)ail, he did reply back with acknowledgement, and a few good sized paragraphs, at that. I'm not sure if this is commonplace or not, but even though I sent mine as an email, he sent the reply in the mail. To me, it seems like he's more sincere that way, instead of just throwing back a canned email response.

In that case, writing worked-or at least they acknowledged me and my views. So I think writing to congressmen and senators about guns is a good idea. The more they hear from us, the better. Theoretically, if they don't get ANY negative feedback, they'll think everyone's cool with what they're doing.

Mark my words there will be a new AWB and it will ban any magazines over ten rounds. If we are lucky assault weapons will be able to remain in the family but definitely no sales to anyone else. We can do nothing about it like we can do nothing about the House and Senate having their own health care system while ours is a bad joke (just wait for the rates to go sky high as is happening now-friends rates went from $150 to $500 a month for supplimental SS health insurance).
Times are different now and just as the first AWB was passed the fury over this last absolutely terrible Conn. shooting (closely followed by the movie theatre shooting) will easily get a new AWB passed. The ONLY big question is will assault weapons be totally outlawed like they were when I "lived" in NYC. At that time I bought 2 HK91's and 2 Mini-14's and legally registrated them. A year later I get a letter from the Rifle and Shotgun licensing board saying I MUST turn them in or transfer them out of state. I have a friend who ignored the letter and 6 of NY's finest showed up at his door with a search warrant and took his assault rifle. He was lucky that he said he never got the letter or if the letter was sent certified he would have been arrested. Now the difference is there is no other place to transfer the weapons to as this will be a Federal law.
Most people with families will never take up arms against any agents to eventually come to their home and they will come. Anyone thinking otherwise is living with the strongest defense mechanism human beings have, denial. We now are the only free nation other than the Swiss but that will change like in England and Canada. I am selling the few assault rifles I have because that is my CD's. If you look at the classified you will see my early Super Match with Hart barrel (Unfired), an unfired HK91 and a Barrett 99. Not cheap because most are sold out and not much time is left. The new AWB should be passed in Feb. this year. Bush did an executive order for the first bill and certainly obuma now that he is in his last term and has great support will either do an executive order or a bill will be passed. The NRA does not have the power people think and obuma was re-elected due to naive or stupid people. I am amazed that on this forum there are so many naive people who live in denial, good people but people who are naive just the same. Maybe I would also be naive but I had my experience in NYC and times are changing.

Was it on this site that someone brought up the origin of "Assault [insert weapon type here]"? I can't remember if it was here or a different site.

They said that the term "Assault Rifle" only started to be used with the German creation of the Strum Ghwer ("Assault Rifle"). They called it that for propaganda purposes, to make it seem like the Germans were actually assaulting instead of defending. So it's used as a verb. Or adverb at least.

When you combine that with "Assault this" and "Assault that" weapons that the Germans had (like the StuG Assault Gun), saying "Assault Weapons/Guns" nowadays basically means anything from the officer's M9 to a Marksman's M14 to the M777 artillery battery-because in an assault, you can have any number of weapons and weapon types used by those soldiers involved in the assault.

Moral of the story is that the term(s) "Assault Rifle" and "Assault Weapons" have been reinterpreted and distorted, so that anti-gunners can make the evil automatic "Assault Weapons" (because all your M14s and AR15s are automatic, don't ya know-we really need to make new legislation banning automatic assault weapons!) go away.

This tragedy has triggered a perfect storm for the restriction/removal of semi automatic rifles as we know it. Between the election results, the change in the attitude of the american people, along with the erosion of our Constitutional rights the past 25 years all points to the President, Congress passing BIG bands. Cavman got POed at me for my post on this matter a few days ago...I hold to my assessment...The country has changed for good, the Constitutional freedom that were given to us has been watered down and flat out removed from the citizenry. As I posted a few days ago, the Election proves me out..64% of Catholics voted Democrat/Obama, only 54% of the people voted, 3 Million fewer Republicans voted, Bush in his 8 years enacted some of the worst search and seizure laws striping your 4 amendment rights (all in the name of fighting the war on terror...hows that working out with the Afghans), 670Million dollar free pills for gramps...it goes on and on and on.If I wasnt gun up I would be hawlking the farm to buy weapons and support gear.

It's a known fact that AK-47 and even M-16's are being brought to Mexico from overseas on ships, and then, they are sold for little to nothing across our borders. Gun laws in the states does nothing to prevent the illegal black market that has been going on for years.

All mass murders happened in the gun free zones.
All victims of mass murderes were unarmed.

Every time there was an armed person among the potential victims, they stopped the massacres and no one knows about that because it is not news when there are no dozens of victims.

If schools still taught math, people would be capable of comprehending what 'statistically significant' meant. Firearm deaths are statistically insignificant compared with the number of lives saved by firearms.

FBI crime stats: there are 2500 incidents per day in the USA when mere presentation of a firearm by a potential victim (without discharging) stops violent crime before it occurs. FBI admits that number is way under-reported for fear of victim to be prosecuted for 'brandishing' a firearm.

Look at Adam Lanza from this perspective: if as anti-gunners suggested, guns had to be locked in his mother's home and someone broke into the house when she was away and murdered Adam because he had no gun to defend himself, who would have been responsible?

If as anti-gunners suggested she completely removed firarms from her home and someone broke into her house, robbed, raped and murdered her and murdered Adam, who would have been responsible?

Yes, he snapped and murdered people. But the problem is his mental state, not her guns.

Any one of us who owns guns knows, that no amount of laws would stop us from killing anyone we wanted as long as we wanted. It's regulation inside our heads that prevents that, not government regulation.

The most recent example of genocide has occurred in Chechnia, Russian Federation, around 1990s. The government confiscated all hunting firearms for 1 month for 'validating registration'. The Chechens immediately began massacring Russians. This is not publicised for obvious reasons but it did happen. How much is too much?

I think the pendulum is going to make a big swing this time.....I expect the POTUS will issue, with the overwhelming support of Congress, an outright ban on all semi auto rifles that take detachable magazines period. I believe this will be a presidential executive order and Congress won't balk. The new semi-auto rifle AWB will not expire. Pistols magazines will be limited to 10 rounds. This will happen by March 2013'.

doubtful. i suspect if that happens a few states will say they're not buying it, much the way that marijuana is prohibited by federal law yet some states say it's legal.

most likely texas, virginia, new mexico and arizona to start.

"The central question remains: is there a consistent meme in the government-media complex case for weapons disarmament and prohibition. There is and it is rather simple. The government’s primary war is one it has waged and will fight through eternity for its very existence. Whether democratic, communist or socialist or every difference in between; the state must extinguish individual self-sufficiency wherever it finds it."
<snip>
"The government hates individual ownership of guns for a basic reason that pales in comparison to their use against tyrannical behavior by said government; private ownership of defense at the atomistic level in any society lessens dependency on the government for anything; once this capability to defend against both private and public predators reaches a peer competitor level with these aforementioned forces, the balance tips in favor of individual autonomy and tips the scales toward self-sufficiency."

Let's not forget that they've also been brought to Mexico from OUR OWN GOVERNMENT.

Funny how they do that, yet they don't want us to have guns.

Not trying to attract negative energy here but all it will take is another incident (staged?) with the perp. using an M1a type rifle and they'll be on the list too...in a heart beat. It seems to me that the goal of those in charge is to convert us into unarmed compliant peons ala Mexico.

I just renewed my NRA membership, however, the NRA has been silent since the shooting. I am sure they are regrouping and trying to find the most tactful way to stand up to the opposition.

Tony.
Today I UPGRADED to LIFE MEMBERSHIPS for the NRA, GUN OWNERS OF AMERICA, and NEW YORK STATE RIFLE and PISTOL ASSOCIATION.
Its time to get active and convince otherers to get active. No more keeping a low profile or staying off the grid.

Merry Christmas everyone!

This is where the NRA will have screwed us all, they have argued for the incorporation of the 2nd amendment for years. Unwittingly giving total control of firearm legislation to the Feds.
