IMHO a short barreled rifle is primarily best suited as a CQB platform. Therefore I'd gravitate towards a red dot.

However a low powered scope like a leapold mark 4 1.5x5 30mm wouldn't be a bad choice to span the gap between the two. be mindful the eye relief isn't quite the same and the scope won't be as quick as the red dot.

I rec 1-5x24mm. Scopes for their ample eye relief.

The weaver tactical has a few illuminated reticle.

FWIW I liked my 16" AR10 best when I had a 3-18X IOR on it. Red dots are okay for shooting bad guys at close distances but no fun on the range.

Funny but the USMC is replacing all of their Knights MK11 20" uppers with M110K1 16" uppers. In tests with M118LR the lighter weight K1 barrel had better long range accuracy out to 1300 meters so not necessarily just for CQB. I have seen chrono data and the difference between a 26" bolt gun and a 16" gas gun with 175 grain FGMM and the velocity difference was 120 fps. With .308 16" seems to be the sweet spot go shorter and velocity starts to drop off a lot more rapidly. So with an accurate 16" gas gun and the right ammo you have the choice, set up for CQB, set up for LR or both.
