I'm sure this will come as no surprise but earlier today, I received a reponse to the letter I wrote to Bob Casey, US Senator for PA, asking him to not support any type of "assault weapon" ban.

He rattled on about supporting the Second Amendment, hunting, shooting sports, etc. but is going to sign on to Diane Fienstien's bill to ban assault weapons and high capacity magazines.

If you have not already written to senators Casey and Toomey, please do so now.

Thanks.

I got this from him yesterday...

Dear Mr. Anthony:

Thank you for taking the time to contact me about recent proposals related to guns. I appreciate hearing from you about this issue.

As you know, on December 14, 2012, an individual in Newtown, Connecticut forced his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School and opened fire on teachers and staff in the building. In total, the perpetrator murdered 20 students between the ages of six and seven years old, as well as six adults, many of whom heroically sought to stop the shooter and save the lives of children. Like many Americans, I was deeply affected by the scope and brutality of this act. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.

The motives that led to this senseless massacre will likely never fully be comprehended. However, I believe that all public officials have a responsibility to work to prevent such an event from occurring again. This incident reflects a complex problem that requires a comprehensive strategy, including funding for law enforcement officers and the mental health care system. Too many individuals with mental illness are not receiving the services they need and tragically, sometimes a small number of these individuals turn violent. I have supported access to affordable and accessible mental health services for all Americans and I will continue to review proposed solutions to improve our mental health system. As lawmakers consider an appropriate response to this challenging issue, we should consider all of the factors that could prevent such heinous acts.

As you may know, I am a strong supporter of the Second Amendment. Pennsylvania has a fine hunting and sporting tradition, and I will defend the right to bear arms as it is enshrined in our Constitution. I will continue to back the right to bear arms for purposes of self-defense, recreation, sporting and collection. However, I also believe that the attack at Sandy Hook Elementary School highlights very serious dangers posed to public safety by the misuse of certain weapons and technology originally developed for warfare. According to reports, the shooter was able to kill many children and adults very quickly because he possessed a military-style semiautomatic weapon. He also allegedly used magazines containing up to 30 rounds of ammunition and carried hundreds of rounds more. After much reflection and careful study of the issue, I have decided to support a federal assault weapons ban as well as legislation restricting high capacity magazines. In light of what occurred at Sandy Hook, these are two measures that will lessen the chances that this will happen again. Before supporting such a law, I would first and foremost ensure that it did not unduly abridge the right to bear arms as established by the Second Amendment.

Our Nation has already begun a critical dialogue as we examine what steps must be taken to prevent this type of tragedy in the future. On January 17, 2012, President Obama unveiled a package of proposals to reduce gun violence, which included strengthening the system of background checks, reinstating the assault weapon and high-capacity magazines ban, improving school safety and expanding access to mental health services. I look forward to reviewing these proposals in detail and to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to address this complex issue.

On January 24, 2013, Senator Dianne Feinstein of California introduced S. 150, the Assault Weapons Ban of 2013. This legislation would explicitly permit the possession of affected firearms that were owned prior to the bill’s enactment; firearms that are manually operated; firearms used by military, law enforcement and retired law enforcement; and antique weapons. Further, this legislation lists 2,258 hunting and sporting rifles and shotguns that are entirely exempt from the ban.

This legislation would ban the sale, transfer, manufacturing and importation of all semiautomatic rifles that can accept a detachable magazine and have at least one of seven specified military features. S. 150 would further ban semiautomatic pistols that can accept a detachable magazine and have at least one of certain listed military features, as well as ammunition magazines that can accept more than 10 rounds. The Assault Weapons Ban would also regulate the transfer and storage of permitted, grandfathered weapons and allow local law enforcement to use certain federal funds for voluntary gun buyback programs. The Assault Weapons Ban was referred to the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, of which I am not a member. Please be assured that should this legislation come before the full Senate for consideration, I will have your views in mind.

Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts with me. Please do not hesitate to contact me in the future about this or any other matter of importance to you.

For more information on this or other issues, I encourage you to visit my website, http://casey.senate.gov. I hope you will find this online office a comprehensive resource to stay up-to-date on my work in Washington, request assistance from my office or share with me your thoughts on the issues that matter most to you and to Pennsylvania.

Sincerely,
Bob Casey
United States Senator

No big surprise,

ole Junior has always been of the Philly/Pitt mindset that banning guns makes the Commonwealth a safer place.

Any word from our other Senator? Pat Toomey has usually been our friend on these issues which at least cancels Bob out.

Casey is a fraud.
Always has been.
Just like his daddy.

He DOES NOT support the 2nd Amendment.
He is in lock-step with the Kenyan.
His voting record reflects a 95% Kenyan supporting role.

Too bad we can not recall this floater.

As for Toomey, the polls aren't in yet, so he has resorted to sending a form letter reflecting his 'support' for the 2nd Amendment.
Toomey's just another RINO.

Losers both.

If the begins to fly, I'm heading South.

louie, out!

I think Mr. Casey needs to be asked if it was the availabilty of the dreaded AW and high-cap magazines that caused this former navy LT. and LA police officer to go off the deep end out in CA. Here was an otherwise respected law abiding individual who seem to have just snapped and going on this rampage.

Roll him over and stick a fork in his a$$...........

I'm on my Legislators ass in Oregon. They don't even want to acknowledge me. They are saying in their "Newsletters" that that TONE of the input from their constituents has changed. I'll be at their Town Hall meetings this month and see how they like my "tone" in a face to face discussion.

I've got a dead weight State Senator who rode his Father's coat tail into politics. That ride is about to get a lot more bumpy.

dont know who this Casey is. If he is a DEM......
you can write till you are blue in the face
The Constitution means NOTHING to Dems
many RHINO's are the same ( you get a 50/50 shot with them).
The ONLY thing that might kill this thing, is the fact
that some 20 of these clowns are looking at Re-Election
in 2014. Yes, even that Idiot Franken is afraid to vote
his commie concience. and for those of you who give
him a second chance........Then again, he won the first
time the same way Harry Reid won the last time
..........He Cheated!!
Just my opinion, of course

Casey is written off in my book, and hopefully the voters of this State don't forget it come next election. Concentrate on Mr. Toomey in your letter writing campaign, as well as your local state reps.

Toomey made a point of stating he supports mental healthcare reform and "supports" the 2nd Amendment.

Honestly I think he's taking the cowards way out. He doesn't want to alienate the city votes, and doesn't want to lose his NRA support.

Casey needs to put on his best suit and take a late night stroll through Chicago.

Want to know what Senators are on our side? Look at who voted against the last NDAA. All 5 or 6 of them.

I recieved the same letter, I called one of his offices back in Jan.(Harrisburg) and the woman on the phone was very cold to me when I expressed my opinion on the Finestein bill.

So I called another one of his offices at the beginning of this month (Allentown) and had a long conversation (about 45min.) with a young man about the 2nd amendment, it's origins, and how it applies to the american individual.

I also explained to him that I believe the Senator confuses the right to own a firearm with the privilege of hunting.

This young man was very polite and seemed very interested in learning more on the subject, admitting to me that he comes from a non gun family and that he draws his opinions on such matters by what he sees or hears from the media.

His opinion of the NRA was also misguided as I explained that the NRA helps to promote gun safety and responsibility and that they also provide programs for LEO's.

My conversation with this young man was a positive as I educated him on the differences between selective fire and semi fire weapons.

All being said though I can only hope that at the very least I helped him understand where a gun owner stands on these issues. I also understand I am not going to change the Senators mind talking to one of his workers.

Senator Casey has always been a politician that votes the way his party wants him to. And by reading his responces he clearly does not understand the Constitution, often confusing privlages, such as hunting ,and rights.

Interesting how he wants to protect "sportsmen" who are in fact the citizens who usually own AR's and M1a's and compete with said rifles. But yet supports the very bills that would make them criminals.

I have been a PA resident for 67 years and recently have come to the conclusion that our Federal and State governments have succumbed to progressive "socialism",
I email Toomey and Casey three and four times a week on the issue of gun control. I've recieved replies from both, in the context of form letters ! Don't know about Toomey, but Casey is definitely in the Kenyans' corner on all issues and all PA gun owners must do everything possible to drive him from office.
As for our State Rep. "commie Doyle", he must go also, as he is no friend of the Second Amendment. Another socialist in a strong Democrapic region ! It will be very difficult to unseat him.
As far as the AW ban is concerned, it looks like it will fail in the Senate, although there is a more dangerous threat that may be imposed via "Executive Order". That being the Universal Background Check which will create a National Registry of all firearms owners and where they reside. I urge all on this forum to contact their Reps and demand that the Congress not allow O'Zero to bypass congressional authority.

We must Stand as One....or Fall as All !!
