The write up at the above link is not bad, but when you read James F. DeRose's book, (Unrestricted Warfare, How a New Breed of Officers Led the Submarine Force to Victory in WWII), you get an excellent and better rendition of Morton as the Skipper of the "238 Boat". He and his XO Dick O'Kane were bold to be sure. This is a “deep” subject about WWII Submarine Warfare and meb'e should only be discussed over on the Navy Thread. Sadly, Morton's disregard for the geographical/tactical situation got him and his loyal crew put on "Eternal Patrol"..
He sure gives credence to that 70's/80’s term (I think???... “Doin’ The FUNK)!!!!
Inspirational to be sure… And actually that term, “rock and a hard place” , where that German officer has him dead to rights, and First Sgt Funk goes Bsereker/Totally FU#%IN’ Thermo Nuclear WarfareBRSTBOMB is “The Bomb” as all the youngster tend to say…
I think a movie documentary of Funk’s time in uniform would be OFS!!!.. I have tons of fun visualizing his actions where he received the DSC and that of being a Army MOH recipient. I’m sure Funk would have a very hard time in today’s Army….Sad but True..RNGR4
