Advise on L.E. Duty Ammo

Hello everyone,
I am a Sheriff Deputy and am in the process of getting my Socom 16 authorized for duty carry. Most of the department is issued M-16 & M-4, with a few 870s left. I am currently carrying a Benelli M1 Tactical. I would like to be able to carry the Socom and the Benelli. The Benelli for close distance and at night, it is light equiped. The Socom for any long distance situations and where penetration is required.

The problem:
Command is a little concerned about the penetration characteristics with the .308 compared to the .223. I am inquiring to any information for duty ammo. I know about Hornady TAP, but would like feedback on that and others. My county has both densely populated areas and miles of fields in the county. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You might want to try......

Rainman, you might want to try Federal Match - that is what the SWAT team carries around here. I have been told it works well for roadblocks and to finish off injured deer and elk.....

It appears that way. But, I'm looking for penetration for say body armor or glass, not looking for penetrating houses and the like. That is what they are worried about. Also if anyone has any links to sites that would be helpfull.
I would suggest you head over to tacticalforums.com and check out the posts DocGkr (Dr. Gary roberts) - who is THE current terminal ballistics guru - have made on the .308 round - here are a few:

You do know that a .223 will defete body armor and glass right?? All things being equil, I would rather have an m14 also
My choice would be Factory Fed High Shock 150 grain PSP Spitzer. This bullet expands and fragments and will lead to a less over penatration.
Got Approved !!

Well, I finally got approved to carry the SOCOM on duty. :D I will be using the 110 gr. Hornady TAP. Thanks for the suggestions.

glad it worked out for you - I thought you were going to have a tough row to hoe.

You may want to try an adjustable gas plug, since that is not a military loading.
