That was also my first thought. I never put an optic on my rail, in fact, I removed the rail on mine, completely. The way the mount is, right on the barrel, right in front of the chamber... that is probably the worst place to put a mount.
I love quoting myself...

Now that I think about it... with your optic mounted on the Socom16 rail... which is mounted on the barrel right in front of the chamber... and you are having issues with wandering zero or shotgun patterns after a few shots. That optic mount turns into a heat sink and what does hot metal do? It expands... or at least tries to.

I'll also say that when I shimmed my gas lock correctly my POI shifted 5", but my groups tightened by 50%.

Sir,
Several things to consider w/ m1a.
1. Semi auto is affected by how you hold weapon(I.e. Recoil sensitive, not a bolt action and not a 22).
Need to pull rifle into shoulder and be consistent with grip (which needs to be firm!).
2. Guns are ammo sensitive! Original m14 was set up for 147 grain. However, most rifles today are 1/10 twist for heavier bullets. Try 168/175 matchking bullet.
My competion m1a would shoot 168 around an inch but ball was about 2+ inch at 100 yds with 1/10 twist.
3. If still bigger than 3" at 100 yds, start looking at gun.
Parts loose, rubbing stock, or bent parts. Groups that large seem like a loose sight.
4. Remmember, gun needs grease to run(excellent articles on Internet ).
Hope this helps!

The Three SOCOMS I have shot were 8" guns at 100 yards.

My Bush gun is a 2 to 2.5 incher.

There is something inherently accuracy wrong with most of the SOCOMs IMHO, baised on my experience, and what I have read from the experience of others.

the front sight has alot to do with how people shoot. Its wider, makes holding it in the same spot more difficult from shot to shot. Try some 110 taps sometime. They tend to shoot very well in the short rifles....

Ammo is also key. In my Rifle I can get right around 1 moa with my 155 Noslers loaded with 4895... If I switch to American Eagle 150s I get 3-4" groups on the same day. My rifle just hates Ameican Eagle 150's. I dont see alot of SOCOM reviews where people are shooting good ammo.

Greetings,

You've already received a lot of good suggestions. I have zero experience with your specific type of rifle, but none of mine particularly care for that ammo. Before you get so frustrated that you sell it off, remove the EoTek, buy a box or two of FGMM and shoot at a reduced distance with the iron sites. The previous suggestion of 25 yards and 1" black boxes was excellent. Get the optic and so-so ammo out of the equation and give it a try. Best of luck!

Regards, Jim

I have a Socom 16, and I took that mickey
mouse rail off. It's a bad idea, I wouldn't
consider using it.

I shot mine with the iron sights at first to make
sure the rifle could shoot. Then I put a scope mount
on the receiver with scope, since my eyes aren't what they used to be.

Good Luck!

So, have you done anything about the rifle yet? Like everybody else says, I think you need to strip it down to the rifle with irons and test the accuracy. My bet is that it will still shoot erratically.

I just thought about this as I was finishing setting aside the owner's parts on a Garand I finished recently. It has the CMP mount that replaces the handguard and is screwed around the rear of the barrel. The instructions to the CMP mount stipulate you must re-tighten the screws after shooting it about five times. While I'm not positive this is the reason, I assume that is because the mount has to settle in. If you have a similar mount, maybe all you need do is retighten the screws.

Yep. My SOCOM was a 6" gun @ 100 yds w/ Remington Match ammo until I fixed it up:

Shimmed gas cylinder.
Put it in a tight fitting wood stock.

Now it shoots about 1.5" at 100 w/ the same ammo.

The SOCOM seemed much more dependent on a good fitting stock and tight GC than my Loaded. I suspect this is because of the shorter, more rigid barrel. When a bullet is fired, it tends to make the barrel whip all around inducing "barrel harmonics" - a shorter barrel is more rigid than a long one, so it will move less but this energy has to go somewhere - it seems to go into moving the receiver about in the stock more so than with a longer barrel.

Shimming up the gas cylinder is probably particularly effective on the SOCOM because there is so little barrel left for the bullet to travel as the GC pressurizes. Keeping that tight works wonders.

A shim kit is like $12. A beater surplus wood stock can be had for $20 or so. Pretty cheap way to test this all out... If it gets your SOCOM shooting well, then look to refinishing the wood to make it nice looking, or look for another stock more to your liking.

I had an issue like yours with my SOCOM. I had shot alot of different types of ammo thru mine. From surplus to Federal Gold medal, 150 grain to 180 grain. Consistent 1.5 moa shooter.

Then I decided to hunt with my SOCOM. My go to around for whitetail deer is the 165 grain Barnes Triple Shok Federal. Love that round!

Went to range to zero my "hunting round". Shotgun pattern. I was stunned. Went home tore my gun down, totally reassembled checking everything. Mounts, optics, and ect. Went back to range, same results. I was pretty out done.

Reached in my bag pulled out another box of ammo. No problem. 2" group at a hundred. So in short bring three or four different types of ammo with you.

Believe it or not my SOCOM likes the 180 grain Wolf Gold. 1.5 moa. For a hunting round.

Threads like this are frustrating, we pay upwards of 1500 for a new rifle because we assume the company that makes it will put out a weapon worthy of our money but sadly many times they dont.

I have noticed that my Scout Squad does not like AE at all, it prefers just about anything to it, a shame since it is economical, but again its not economical if it doesnt perform. If your socom is like my scout it could be the ammo in which case we can not really blame SAI.

Good luck with her, stay positive it will work out.

Be patient with her..
This almost sounds like me reanting about the Ruger mini 14s a few yrs past..

I agree with most of what been suggested here, take off the optics ,try 3 ,4 different brands ammo etc.
Definately do the 25yd rifleman appleseed or army marksman ship zero.

And if you really git po"ed,sell her to one of us...

I am having the same problem with my Socom II with a Sage EBR stock. Past 75 yards I shotgun the target, within 75 yards its good. Used different ammo from military ball to Federal gold 168 gr and its the same. First 4-5 rounds good hits then crap. Used different scopes and same results. I will now strip the rifle and check the internals parts. Thanks for the info guys, this will help.
