Ran into a guy at a local HS Football game wearing a Desert Storm hat that claimed to be an Air Force Forward Observer....said he was based out of Saudi and dropped into the sandbox daily from an C130. Said he was responsible for getting SEALS into the fight, and rescuing them when it was "Black-out Bad" (???????)...the line was long at the concession stand and he was keeping me entertained and others in "awe".....I finally busted out in laughter when he described a "jump" where he said after he "jumped" he realized he did not properly pack his fins and mask and when he hit he had to find his way blind to the beach.....Holding temporary composure I asked him if HS-8 was able to drop a SAR to assist him......he said "nope....no time, had to get in fast a laser the target"......

As you can imagine.....I had a hard time holding it in. But when I asked him where he was being inserted that he needed fins as a AF Forward Observer he stated there were.....y'all get ready and put drinks down....he stated that "there were many lakes around palaces and he landed in one...but he was able to stand up and wade to the area he needed to be..."

It was so hard not to laugh, and I didn't want to embarrass the guy. But that was F-U-N-N-Y!!!! I told my wife "HS-8" was a helo squadron in CAG14 from CV64 that nothing to do with anything...he was just playing along with whatever I said....and stumbling.....the posers can be entertaining...I never did regain enough composure to ask what "Black-out Bad" meant......LOL

The Army version, short and sweet:

1. I will guard everything within the limits of my post and quit my post only when properly relieved.

2. I will obey my special orders and perform all of my duties in a military manner.

3. I will report violations of my special orders, emergencies, and anything not covered in my instructions to the commander of the relief.

I nearly shot a company commander who I didn't know was my company commander! I challenged and he ignored me and kept coming - this was at night and I was guarding the ammo dump for the Texas Army National Guard! I was new and met my First Sergeant but not the C.O. The sudden rise in the pitch of my voice halted him immediately. (I had just gotten off active duty which is very different). #1 was being violated as well - the advance to be recognized part. You have to know your chain of command.
lol! - after 30 years all I could remember was the 1st one. After reading them it jogged my memory. DISHOUT

I don't think anyone would ever fake being an Air Force vet.
Well, maybe if he worked in the Stargate program...? GI1

Marines will know what I'm talking about Pomeroy and obviously the newscaster was never stationed there. From the commanding general on down, there was no "r" in LeJeune. VFW Life, VVA Life, MCL Life, MODD
I have never known any of my friends, students, or relatives who are Marines to put an "R" in LeJeune. The locals often do, but no Marine I have ever met.

Something I've learned recently is that some posers did wear a uniform. Calling what they did "service" is a misnomer because they did the exact opposite of service. They just took and took, ruined unit cohesion, and distracted their leaders from spending precious time on soldiers that were more deserving of it. To me, they are worse than what we generally call a poser because they didn't just steal valor, they did real damage to the units they were in. But because they have a piece of paper, they get lumped in with the company of good people.

Truer word couldn't have been spoken. We're grappling with these very issues. Just one or two bad apples can seriously degrade the moral and cohesion of a unit.

ROTC summer camp, Ft Lewis, WA. 1962 One of our guys was walking a post when someone approached. "Halt, who goes there ? The response is Captain Marvel. Guard says "Well this is Superman-now fly your ass over here and get recognized." Up walks an Army Captain with Marvel on his name tag. I still laugh about that one.
That summer, I made the 6th Army ROTC Rifle Team and we went to Perry with M1s

SIMPLE: Every panhandler bum who fakes Vet status at my shopping center I just ask

'What was Your MOS ? '

99% look at me like a dog who don't understand human language
That's One Good Question...

But there's a lot of posers out there that have read enough books, seen enough movies, played video games, etc....that they know to say:

11 B !

So...If that's all that is asked...it isn't enough.

Some of these posers are in fact fairly well versed in their assumed identity...they have rehearsed and practiced their deception. Possibly they have a relative who was a vet and they studied his demeanor and adopted his speech and stole his stories...

Maybe you're just running into...Amateurs!

I have, just in the last year...run into a poser who initially fooled the Vet Center Staff(also Veterans!)
It wasn't just one question he 'couldn't remember anymore and wanted to forget'...it was a whole series of questions we asked just trying to welcome a fellow VN Veteran and wanting him to tell us 'his story'!

Down here they have figured out that MOS is a job, but they want to tell me the job title, or fall back to the good old "Infantry". Then they never know the actual MOS number, because I'll always ask them sometbing different by saying "Oh yeah, Infantry is 6122 right?" Which is an Avation mos. And they usually agree lol.

I have never understood it myself. Why claim something you aren't. Then again I was always raised on being truthful, standing on principles and being honorable. So it doesn't make sense to me. I never served in the .mil and couldn't fathom saying otherwise

You just described every gunshow I've been to in the last year. As I told one old guy who was the 50th Force recon vet I had met that day, I must have been the only Marine to ever serve in the airwing, cause everyone else was either Force Recon or Scout Sniper. Way to many Seals, Green Berets and freaking spaceship door gunners at the gun shows anymore.
