Just got my first M1A, a new Socom 16. I'm new to these but not to shooting. I have some AR's and other rifles, shotguns and handguns.

Been watching TonyBen's videos and trying to learn all I can. I'm considering a Vortex Viper PST 1-4 and trying to figure out what mount to use. It seems that nobody uses the Springfield mounts...? Now I have another money pit. ICONCOOL

Welcome from New Mexico and enjoy your SOCOM---If you are looking for glass consider one of the scout scope options that mounts on the included rail of your socom.

I use the Leatherwood 3-7x32 with BDC and Love it

But several on the forum like the Nikon EER 2-8x28 with a BDC

Both make great scout mounted scopes and permit "two eyes open" shooting (which I have just recently grown to love)

Good luck and welcome aboard

Thanks for the ideas. I'm looking for a lower magnification (1-4 seems like a good choice). I'm used to using a Red Dot with both eyes open on my Colt 6920 M4. I see the Socom 16 as being more of a close quarters rifle and probably won't push it past 300 yards. I have others for the longer ranges.

Welcome from Indianapolis. I too am a new SOCOM 16 owner. I trained with the M14 in the Navy (1970) but switched to the M16 within months.
