My cousin recently bought an NDM-86 and is now trying to figure out what to do about accurate ammo.

Does anybody have any good ideas for ammo for this type of rifle? Keep in mind, it’s a gas gun and is going to be limited to the weight of bullet just like the Garand and M14.

Thanks, Chris

If you can find it, the Hungarians let a Lot of 7.62x54R that was used to gauge accuracy in this caliber weapon. AIM had it, in white boxes, just before Xmas. It was Light Ball, and approximately the same as the N70 Russian Sniper ammo.

Failing that, try to find some East German Light Ball. It's the most accurate non-special ammo I've found. :D

I tried a bunch of "match" ammo in my NDM-86 and had mediocre results with accuracy. What I finally did was slug my bore and then load for it. My bore is .312 so I use Hornady's 150 grain soft point that they make for the 7.7 Jap and .303 British. Using this bullet, Norma brass and H-414 powder I have been able to shoot five rounds into about 1 to 1.5 inches at 100 yards on a regular basis.

Also, I bought a Russian 6x scope, which helped with shooting targets from the bench. If your cousin can afford it, I would look at the new Russian 3x9 scope. It wasn't being imported when I bought the 6x scope and I wish I had one now. One of these days I'll pick one up.

I hope this information helps.

SVD and MOA

The SVD is not a MOA weapon. Some shooters can get as good as 1.5" @ 100 meters with it... but... its rare...

The best ammo that you can use in this rifle is made by the Novosibirsk LVE Plant in Russia. Wolf currently imports 7.62x54R from Novosibirsk. If you get a box of it... make sure it has a little circle on the end of the box flap with the letters "LVE".

Also, heavier 7.62x54R is much less accurate... the best results are obtained by the 148 Grain bullets.

I hope this was helpful for my first post here...
