7.62x51 Special Ball

First, sorry if this is a dupe.I did a search and didn't come up with much.

Went to a gun show today and picked up some Lake City Special Ball at 5.00 a box of 20.It is just the standard 118,not the LR.

What bullet weight are these? Is it the 173gr.?The headstamps are 91 and 92.Was this a fair price?

I thought it was reasonable.I usually shoot surplus, but there wasn't anything else there and I hate going home empty handed ;) .

Does anyone know what the point of impact change will be compared to port.?I'm not sure if I'm going to shoot this or save it for now.

Thanks for any help.

carguym14,

At $5 a box. you did great, I have seen it as high as $ 20 a box at GS here in the Southwest. The best I have found was $8 a box, I used it just last month, M118 (LC-85E135-016) Lake City surplus ammo from 1985. The first string was a 194-9X, 2nd group a 199-12X at 100Yd. It worked real well in my NM M1A.

Change of impact point, for me it was a large difference. Portuguese m/963 surplus ammo from 1978 (lot FNM78-23). The first string was a 181-0X, 2nd group a 190-4X at 100Yd. Range report from 2.23.05...... What do you think?

Thanks for the responses,guys!

So,Is this 173 gr. or 147gr.?I'll probably try some out this weekend.I got 51 boxes-one had been opened,so I figure I'll try them out.

XXIV-That's some good shooting.Off hand, right? That's where I shoot with my Garand-mid 180's.I might try the M1A this year in a match.I'll probably get "spanked" for posting this here, but I like the balance of the M1 a little better when shooting matches.

Thanks again and Good Shooting!

Blasphemy!!

I think everyone on this forum appreciates a good rifle, and the Garand is a good one.

The M118 Special Ball cartridge is a 7.62-mm boat-tailed bullet (rear of bullet is tapered) and weighs 173 grains. Its spread (accuracy standard) for a 10-shot group is no more than 12 inches at 550 meters, according to military sources. Great buy for $5 a box!
:? The old White Box M-118 have never Impressed me, the M-852 is much more Accurate, but at $5 a Box I'd buy it just for the Brass :!:
the only place i've seen that sells m118 is http://www.impactguns.com/store/ammo_lg.html
anyone else know of a place to buy?
