Well, I now have a AK, an M1A and a M1A SOCOM, so was considering something in an AR platform for a big bore round. Since I already have an abundance of 45-70 bullets available I am considering a 458 SOCOM AR15. Now, I have never owned one of these platforms, was issued an M16a1 back in the corps, and didn't care for it, so I never bought one when I got out. BUT I think I'm getting the itch for the round more than the rifle, but I'm willing to give it a try.
So, to that end, I've done some research, but for those that own/owned one of these, what rifle would be the best to purchase? I am not planning on building one, just want to buy one. I will hunt with this and I'm thinking that this could be the rifle I'm going to suppress.
I've looked at the Rock River, and it seems like a decent package, but that's the only one that I've looked at that isn't just an "upper".
Thanks for the help!! And NO I don't NEED this, but I think I WANT it!

Tromix, is 1 hell, of a rifle. Give Tim a call, excellent service. I dealt with him on the phone, when ordering parts for mine. 16'' barrel, bolt, break, gas port/tube, break, his case gauge, best on the market. My rifle shoots excellent. Load with Lil Gun, 300/325 gr. bullets, (Hornady, Sierra, Rem) Tromix, will and has a quick turn around on his parts and uppers. This rifle is a blast to shot, Layed 2 hogs down, and love to shot concrete blocks. Hard on steel targets. I stopped by Star Line Brass, and bought directly from them, their 250 pcs. best deal out their. Didn't need mine either, but have it, and as stated a hoot to shoot. Mine is accurate at 100 yds, good groups shooting a Vortex Strick Fire red dot. Good part is If you own a AR 15 lower your set

Uppers for sure, but talk to Tim, he will help, and get you pointed in the right direction. These rifles are not that hard to build, low pressure, and recoil for big boys. Save a lot of money buying parts and have GS put it together, save some money for brass, and dies.

Thanks Yoteman, does Tromix make a rifle? I've never built an AR and I don't think this rifle is the place to learn! I'll look Tromix up and see what they make.
If you buy a complete upper the lower is not that hard to assemble. The only special tool that you will need is a wrench for the castle nut on the buffer tube.

You may also want to look into the 450 Bushmaster, cheaper to shoot and better ballistics.

I am not sure about its suppressed capabilities but for some of the states that allow hunting with straight walled cases this is one of them allowed in most, I live in Michigan, the guy who developed the Bushy is from here.

Here is a forum that goes into the details on the Bushy,
450bushmaster.net.

God bless,

Thanks mossy, main reason i am looking at the 458 is that i already load for 45-70, so I have bullets already....but I do load for 45Colt which also is .452, so it wouldn't be a stretch to go with the 450 either. Both rounds definitely have their plus sides!

One of the cartridges, the .450 Bushmaster, can use standard AR mag bodies IIRC, from an article I read when considering one. That could be an advantage. A 10-round AR-15 magazine body will yield a 5-round magazine, a 20-round AR-15 magazine body will yield a 9-round magazine, and a 30-round body will yield a 13-round magazine. HTH.

CMMG has one coming out soon. It has a dedicated lower. Their thinking is the AR 15 lower can't withstand the 458 round over time. This is CMMG's opinion.
RRA makes one I believe.
Good hog rifle.

I have an 1895 guide gun and a rock river 458 socom . I tried alot of different bullets but ended up with remington 300 grain hollow points for both guns they are cheap and accurate and I havent found anything in missouri I cant kill with a 300 grain bullet going 1850 fps . I buy them in bulk 40.00 per hundred . buy them cheap and stack them deep .

Does any body know if .35 Remington will fit in a AR mag?
I think a wildcat base on .35 rem case necked down to .338 would make a interesting round.

Don't buy into the story CMMG, has out their. The early 458 socum, blowing up. These are low pressure weapons, Tromix, and that bunch, have uncounted rds., fired and no rifles blowing up. Myself, and 2 others, have Tromix complete uppers, and several 100 rds., fired no problems.

I agree I have owned a rock river 458 socom for close to ten years and it is not a safe queen . I think cmmg is embelishing things just a bit as I have a couple thousand rounds through mine and never had an issue , but I follow the rules of reloading and dont try to make the gun something its not.

Was at the gun show on Saturday down in Columbia SC and didn't see anything of interest....that is until on the second or third pass I saw an AR sitting on the table of one of the dealers. It was a new unfired Rock River Arms 458 SOCOM, so what could I do?? I had a S&W Model 22 (made in 2007) and the rest in cash! Even came with a box of ammo. Now I need to take it apart, check it out and then get it out and shoot it!
I already ordered brass from Starline and set of loading dies. Already have the powder, primers and bullets!!
Should be a fun time at the range this week if the weather permits!
