.22 concrete nail fastening blanks?

10645 Views 32 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  grndpndr
I was going throug some stuff yesterday while we were cleaning out a building and i found something odd.

they were concrete nail blanks for a hand held single shot nail gun. I found all kinds of them but here is a picture of the most common four in the box.

My main question is this, are they safe for any old .22 rifle or pistol to fire them, cause if not i wil not shot one out of my 10/22 again. I already tested one of the shorter ones in my 10/22 and it seem like it fired all right, my real question is could i fire the longer ones that i have lodded up in this mag with out damaging my gun over time.

Would like some input on this, cause if they are ok to fire i will start using them in my pistol to scare off birds or that pesky raccon that finds his way in to my dumpster again.

Sorry for the bad pics my camera was on the fritz today.

Good Shooting.

Thanks for all the input guys ive bhen thinking about it realy long and hard and figured i would keep a few for my ammo collection and the rest im gona git rid of.

Turtle thanks for the link i think i might get some of those.

OH and if any body is wondering about that .357 in a .38spl i cant tell you how it works either but for some reason my grandfathers old lever action can do it. Ive told him that its dangerous but he tells me im crazy and that i sould go read a book or someting so oh well on that one.

Like i said befor i was just wondering if it was ok i guess it was better to ask than go and screw up something. So lesson learned on this and if they hade worked i would have bhen happy that way i could stop those damm wood peckers with out having to kill them, but i guess i will just forget about my dang tree any ways.

Used to have one of the hammer units those blanks were intended for. My thought is that, in addition to the other issues already posted, there is a real danger of frags from those cases being fired out the barrel of a regular firearm- they were not designed for anything but the 'hammer' and the manufactor was under no obligation to make them safe for other uses. I would also have some concern that they might have old tyme corrosives as well.
My we have a risk adverse society who ignore physics. With no load in front of the charge, you are not going to hurt the rifle. You could fill the barrel FULL of any powder you want and with no load you'll never come close to over pressuring a rifle. As long as the cases are shorter than the chamber, make all the noise you want....O.L.

See thats what i was thinking, but some people here (not mentioning any body) say its dangerous. Yes some of them are dangerous but others are safe and i allready went through that and still got the same dang answer.

The blanks suggested are DANGEROUS for the exact same reasons. They spew crap out the barrel, that's it. The only way you get a BANG is if there is a load in front or the powder is very fast as in black powder so you get a pop. Pull a bullet out of anything and fire it off or cut the end off a shot shell, pour out the lead and see what you get, you'll be disappointed...O.L.

I found some of these in my grandpa's work shop when I was a kid, at the time I didn't know they were for a nail gun and I actually thought they were .22 blanks! Always wondered why grandpa had .22 blanks, but he had already passed so I couldn't have asked him. Anyway, I had a great time firing them off in my dad's old bolt action Mossberg and never had an issue. I'm not advocating shooting them, just sharing my experience.

Litigous society or not there are very good reasons to use proper ammunition designed for use in your firearm. One is why would you risk damaging a firearm, your person or god forbid a completely innocent party undeserving of YOUR darwin award. Then you will learn the true meaning of an overly litigous society the hard way and deservedly so
IMHO.
A co-worker coaches track & field , and asked me about finding .22 blanks for his starter pistol. No shops stock them locally and will only order some large number. School won't reimburse him for anything purchased from a gun shop. I gave him a box of RamSet power loads. They worked , but the kids say they went on the puff of smoke that the .22 black powder blanks produced.
+1 for not using any version of these in your weapons.

Whether you think its safe or not. Or if anybody tells you that its safe or not. Ask yourself if you would ever want to tell your grandkids that you were blinded while firing blanks out of a gun that it wasn't intended for, just to scare some birds.

That should give you your answer.

As long as theres interest along with current questions about nail gun power
loads and thier use in sporting arms(safety issues) it would seem to me to be a VERY current topic. If it is closed topic lets let a moderator do so. No offence but If you want to become a moderator then I suggest you approach the PTB.Until then I would refrain from making demands of the members as thier likely to fall on very deaf ears.GI1

Many, if not most of us are PFC's(private f*ing civilians) now.

You started the thread so now you have"some authority" over the issue?Who says? You did indeed ask the question as the OP but any follow up questions that have merit should be answered (particularly safety issues)that did come up after you assumed the thread was "Officially" closed.

This thread will be closed but not due to the posts that had merit but your argumentative posts and dare I say embarressment over posting such a dangerous suggestion as firing concrete blanks! Get over yourself! YOU were the OP now your embarrassed about the topic!SO SORRY you feel this embarrassment
but maybe YOU and others learned its not a wise practice so Kudos to you for opening the topic but shame on you for attempting to stifle discussion!

It was and is a good topic for safetys sake and nothing to be embarrasssed about!GI1

PS; In the 45 yrs Plus Ive been shooting and reading about shooting Ive seen this topic before.
How many times i cant recall but yur far from the first to ask.So In fact the topic seems timeless
from my perspective of nearly 1/2 century.RELAX my friend! Its not a negative reflection on you unless YOU make it so.
