Reminds me of Ft. Polk in 67. The pop up targets were green in a green thicket.

Yeah, but the green thicket was usually pretty well chewed up around the target by all the misses!

That was on the assault course and it was the green pop ups. DI was so busy talking he wandered out front 15 yards almost to the first line of popups Hawaiian guy next to me asked what he should do ? We had two loaded 20rd magazines so I said keep shooting till he figures it out. We never knew if he was playing with us or just goofed up. Great guy he went over a year later and was KIA putting his tank infront of a disabled APC to save the crew and took three B40's. Saw his wife and daughter on the Bobby Brown show on the TV on the late 1970's. the APC commander E6 was there too.. SFC Forman was a good guy but it was his job to keep us off footed and thinking when we were exhausted.

The Army started using the green pop-up E type silhouettes for qualification in the mid 1950's. The course of fire is described in the 1957 printing of FM 23-71 Rifle Marksmanship Course Trainfire I.

1. used white board targets for distance qual 1- 2 - 300 yd.
2. then a closer range ?? yds with pop up green zombies . . . cadre painted faces on the pop ups !
