I have a question..................

My SA was born on 12/2002 #1496**

My barrel is stamped SA 7790190 9 62 SD9

Is this a 1962 barrel? Whats the SD9 stand for? If this is a 1962 barrel is it a chromelined barrel? I had a pre 1990 M1A that had a chrome lined H&R barrel that looked a bit different in the chamber as far as brightness. Maybe my memory is off a bit as its been awhile.

Anyways I thought by 2002 all the USGI stuff was gone on production rifles. the rest of my parts seem to be new production.

I bought this from the original owner who said nothing was done to the rifle.

Thanks,

Joker

That part number is for a standard chrome-lined M14 barrel. Yours was made by Springfield Armory in September of 1962. The last digits are the lot number of the steel.

The amount of chrome lining visible in the breech varies from manufacturer to another, and from one production lot to another. It is not a perfect science.

By 2002, SAI did not have much left in terms of new USGI barrels. The one being used were mostly take-offs from demilled M14's. I have checked the throat erosion on several from that time period and they were around 1. Still plenty of life in them, but the barrels used in the mid '90s usually gauge at 0.

Thank you. It shoots real well too. I worked up a load using a Sierra 168 gr. HPBT , 39 gr. 4895, L.C. brass trimmed to specs, and a CCI primer.

It did a 10 round shot group in the 9 and 10 rings off bags at 100 yards with iron sights.

I think I'll keep her !
