This is what I use on boards.

There are different size and shape tips for it and is cordless.
Use a wet sponge to clean it off.
I just replace mine, was 30 years old, replaced the battery once in that time.
Most tips can be reduced, but keep away from the heating element.
They have to be tinned well right after cutting.

Looks like a real hoot.... CW keeps out the riff raff.

That's why I'm doing this project! Differnt...

      HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! GI1

That's through-hole soldering! That's not tiny or crowded by today's standards at all. That's ancient technology from the 1980's. Axial lead resistors? Really? HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! RNGR1...

If you have a decent soldering station (Pace or Metcal), small tips are certainly available. You don't want to file down an iron-metal tip as that will remove the plating and destroy the heat transfer properties. But, if you have the little $6 15-watt pencil irons from the local hardware store (with copper tips) you can certainly file them down to a point and as long as you tin it immediately, it will work fine but you'll find that it gradually eats away.

I would REALLY recommend getting a decent soldering station from Techni-Tool or somewhere similar. Go slow and inspect your work carefully with a loup. Use a board vise or rig up some other way to hold the board steady. Work from the center out. ...

Have fun with it! Good project! GI2
I'm just glad there is no surface mount stuff. (Actually there are two preinstalled surface mount components on the board already)
Got the blue board vise already. Will get the soldering station.
I am amazed at the sub-visible construction of modern electronics...Otherworldly...Maybe we should worry...The Matrix...20 years ago it came out...is happening today! Just don't let 'em put a circuit in your body.

A long way from the valves and chassis I started with.

Cool tool. Will look at it. Right tools = success.

Look into getting a solder sucker pen for removing excess solder from the pcb if you over solder a component or need to remove it...They're cheap, and sure helps clean up "uh ohs",
The way my projects go there are a lot of those!

Thanks everyone. This is an odd modern/retro adventure.

      Will keep you posted.
